Youth raisers ages 9-18 may join 4-H and raise their puppy as a 4-H project. Each year in July 4-H youth enter their project in the County Fair. Entries include a project book with a story and a poster or scrapbook describing one aspect of the puppy raising project. Entrants may also participate in an interview with the judges about their project. (At this time there is no Guide Dog project at the state level, so winning entries do not go on to the state fair). Winners receive recognition at the 4-H Awards night from both Arapahoe County and Guide Dogs for the Blind, and may be eligible to apply for 4-H and Guide Dog scholarships. Our raisers' posters are displayed throughout the year whenever we do educational programs.
FAIR PROJECT TIPS from Carmen Moyer If you are a 4-H raiser, it’s always time to think about next year’s project. Wouldn’t it be great to avoid the last minute scramble to re-create data from an entire year of puppy raising? The trick is to keep good records all year round, as the events occur. Learning to keep accurate records is a life-long tool toward successful living. Here are a few tips to get you started: Have a plan for saving important information such as height and weight, big club or state-wide activities, vet info, money spent on the dog for supplies and food, etc. Make a file, assign a box, or even write on your calendar to keep records. Review the schedule page on the website. Under "Events" there are pages that are a good reminder of guide dog activities during the preceding year. Take pictures as your puppy grows and at special activities. Record the date and other vital info on back of pictures and include them in your file. They will be needed for the 4-H project and are often used to prepare an album for the puppy's eventual blind partner. You’ll need a record of your growing pup’s weights and heights (from the shoulder to the floor). To help remember, vow to weigh and measure on heartworm day, or when you fill out your monthly puppy report.

Emily Groves received the Blue Award, Champion, and Reserve Grand Champion for her project, "Penne, Yep, Like the Pasta." (Junior Divison)

Miranda Loughry received the Blue Award, and Reserve Champion for her project, "A Day in the Life of Kingston, Career Changed Guide Dog Puppy, and ME!" (Junior Division)

Charlton "Chuck" Henderson received the Blue Award for his project, "Adventures in Raising 3 Guide Dog Puppies." (Junior Divison)

2009 Arapahoe County Fair

Trevor Kalkus was awarded a blue award, and Grand Champion in the senior devision for his project, "Hey Jude."

Nicole Groves was awarded a blue award and Reserve Grand Champion in the senior division for her project "History of Guide Dogs for the Blind."

2008 Arapahoe County Fair

4-H'ers have the opportunity to meet with the judges for an interview on judging day.
While this is optional, it does offer a valuable life experience to the 4-H'er,
and gives the judge insight into the candidate's County Fair project.

Casey Horgan's project, "Enhancing Lives" received a Blue Award, Senior Reserve Champion, and Overall Reserve Grand Champion.


Erin Lukacovic's project, "How can you help a Guide Dog or Guide Dog Puppy in Training Succeed at its Job" received a Blue Award, Senior Champion, Overall Grand Champion, and The GDB Pin for Best Record Book: Senior.


Jennifer Sutton received a Blue Award, the Junior Reserve Champion and GDB Pin for Best Records: Junior, for her project, "Raising a Guide Dog Puppy."


Leah Jonas received a White Award for her County Fair entry, "Traveling with a Guide Dog Puppy."


Nicole Groves received a Red Award for her project, "Life with Theodore."


Tonya Santaus received a Blue Award for her project, "Change Is Not Always Easy."


Trevor Kalkus received a Red Award for his project, "Puppy Play."
