MARTY
2004-2010
A
short life, long treasured.

Marty was a male yellow lab raised by Kelsey Rea.
Kelsey says:"Marty was the second puppy my amily
raised for Guide Dogs for the Blind. He was my
favorite puppy, curling up all 65 pounds of himslef
in my lap, waiting for me to get up in the morning,
being my faithful homwork companion, and puttin gup
with anything and everything. he was paired with a
man from Canada in April 2006 and was a great guide
for him. Unfortuantely, he had to be put to sleep on
June 20, 2010. |

Tribute to a
retired Guide and friend

FORD
Ford was a yellow lab raised by Bill and Laurie
Schwanitz. Born in 1994, Ford returned to the Boring
campus in 1995, and graduated in 1996. He worked
until 2002 and returned to home after his companion
could no longer use a Guide and was unable to care
for him as a pet. Bill and Laurie were thrilled to
have him re-join their family of 3 other dogs, Eli
and soon-to-be Gillian in 2002. Ford slowed
down a lot in his last 2-3 years, but never seemed
to be in pain. He ate his breakfast one morning,
took an afternoon nap, and didn't wake up. Ford was
always there for support and hugs--he made a great
pillow! What a wonderful life Ford had in his
various careers. He will be greatly missed, and our
hearts go out to the Schwanitz family in this time
of grief. (week of April 7th) |

Good bye, dear friend

Annie, a golden retriever owned by Frank &
Cheryl Bennett,
went to the rainbow bridge on Tuesday, 24 March.
While not from Guide Dogs, Annie did patiently help
Frank & Cheryl with
all the HPWT puppies that that have puppy-sat over
the years.
She was a dear friend of many years and will be
greatly missed.
Our sympathies go out to the Bennetts in this time
of grief. |

DRAEGER
2008-2010
Our deepest condolences to the Groves family &
the adoptive family of their career change dog,
Draeger.
While playing in the front yard with his family,
Drager darted out into the street to chase a
rabbit.
He didn't see the car; it was going too fast to
stop and this beautiful, young LXG was hit and
killed.
Please, everyone--keep your puppies on a
leash when they are in an unfenced area--even if
you are only loading them in the car.
Then Draeger's memory will be honored and this
devistating, preventable situation will
never be repeated.

Odetta:
Diabetic Altert Dog

Odetta, a female black
lab rasied by Casey Horgan, will graduate as a
diabetic alert dog with her partner Kathy, on February 20th
2010!
According to Cheryl at Dogs4Diabetics, "They
have made a wonderful team and have
taken on the task of finishing dogs for us as
well. Odetta is a a
great little worker and has been teaching newer
D4D dogs how to alert
in real life before they are matched with a
diabetic partner.
Odetta
has been on the go with Kathy from the start.
Kathy is a
competitive
swimmer so Odetta gets lots of time hanging out at
a pool, by a lake or
in a boat following behind Kathy as she swims.
She traveled to
Oregon
for the Thanksgiving holiday and was great on the
flights. Odetta has
saved Kathy's life numerous
times and will continue to do so for years to
come!"
Congratulations,
Casey, and thank you for gifting your career
change dog to such a
wonderful life of service! Find out more about
Dogs4Diabetics here. |
Good-bye,
Dear Friend

Rodeo
1998-2009
It
is
with
great
sadness
that we share with you the passing of a
wonderful guide dog and
friend, Rodeo. Many of you know Rodeo,
the grey-muzzled retired guide of Leonard
Decker. Rodeo developed
a
nasal cavity tumor was inoperable and causing
siginifcant blood loss.
He passed peacefully from this world with his
head resting in Leonard's
lap and surrounded by his puppy raiser, Dot
Dill, and several other close friends. His
exit was
compassionately
and peacefully aided by his friend and long-term
veterinarian Dr. Randa MacMillan.
Leonard and Rodeo graduated as a team 10
years ago from the
Oregon
campus. Rodeo will be remembered for his
outstanding guide skills, his devotion to his
partner Leonard, his many
friends among guide dog puppy raisers, his joy
for life, his ability to
party like a crazy puppy and for his lifetime of
service.
Rodeo:
whelped 5/28/98, graduated 12/11/99, crossed the
Rainbow Bridge 12/1/09.

English Guide Dog Appeal
For
two
years,
webmistress
Andrea
&
her
family
have
lived
in
Oxford,
England--puppyless!
This statue of a guide dog and pup at a
local
supermarket, (which is an appeal for coins
for the Guide Dog for the
Blind Association) was the closest thing
they could get to an actual
Guide Dog! Now they are moving back home to
Colorado, and if all goes
well, will receive a puppy from one of the
fall deliveries. Andrea and
Miranda can't wait to see you all at the
August 10th puppy meeting!

that makes HPWT's puppy
