Light Rail to Downtown DenverJuly 19, 2004Since many blind people live or work in urban areas, and use public transit as their major means of transportation, we make sure our puppies get at least one visit to downtown Denver during their stay in the puppy raiser home. The dogs experience a light rail ride, mall bus, and the sights and sounds of the city. This year we had 16 dogs and over 20 people on the outing. The club broke up into smaller groups so that the places we entered would not feel overwhelmed with a puppy invasion! Union Station--The Light rail train's destination. |

| Light Rail The dogs experience the approach of the train, boarding, and riding on a train. Once on board, they tuck under the seat or sit quietly beside their raiser in order to make room for other passengers. All of our puppies handled these experiences beautifully. |

Waiting for the train. |
Here it comes! |
Boarding the light rail can be tricky. Make
sure to control the puppy, and don't let it drag you up the steps!
Bombay tucks under LeKathryn's legs, while Emmett and Akira make themselves comfortable further down the car. |
Lynda explains the puppy raising project to an interested fellow traveler, while Akira patiently waits. |
Ferrari has no qualms about riding the train. Doesn't he look dapper in his raincoat? |
At 4 months old, Alexi can easily fit under the light rail seats. |
Six-month-old Akira has no trouble squeezing in between everyone's feet. |
Perhaps sitting up is a better solution for Emmett. Tonya's lap makes a comfortable head rest. |
. Year-old Emmett has a tighter fit in his efforts to tuck under. |
End of the line! Raisers wait at the Union Station terminus for a mall bus to take us to the 16th street mall. |
LeKathryn and Bombay wait with another puppy raising pair, as the bus drives up. |
Boarding the bus is just the same as the light rail, only the steps aren't quite so steep! |
Cougar, Marty, and Alexi relax at their raiser's feet while the mall bus whisks us on our way. |

| DOWNTOWN
DENVER - 16th STREET MALL The puppies experience crowds, traffic, street cafes, pet dogs, and more in the heart of the Mile High City. |
Ilka &Lauren, Marty and Kelsey, and Ferrari and Wendy wait to be assigned to a group for the mall phase of the outing. |
Carmen instructs the group about our goals for the evening. |
LeKathryn and Bombay, and Wendy and Ferarri are happy to be underway! |
Carmen's group waits to cross the street. Lynda & Akira reach the sidewalk on the other side. |
Tonya and Emmett and Kate and Alexi make their way across. |
Many of our suburban dogs have never seen a horse before! |
Akira doesn't mind meeting the huge animal. |
Alexi isn't so sure about this... |
But Kate takes the time Alexi needs to feel more confident about the situation. |

We finished up at Sonic Burgers for some ice cream. Emmett waits as Tonya orders. |
Emmett & Marty tuck under as best they can while Tonya, Wendy and Kelsey enjoy their treats. |
Carmen and Bayla, Kelsey & Marty (y-lab, behind), Sheila, Wendy & Ferrari (b-lab, behind) and Lauren & Ilka head to Union Station to catch the light rail for the trip back home. |
